Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 October 2026
This policy explains what personal data DealOwl handles, why, on what legal basis, and what your rights are under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (“UK GDPR”), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (“PECR”).
1. Who is responsible for your data
The controller is the operator of DealOwl. For anything about your personal data, contact us at the contact details given on the site.
2. What we do, and what we don’t ask for
DealOwl compares product prices at online retailers and shares deals on the site and in channels (Telegram, WhatsApp and social media). You don’t need an account to browse: we don’t ask for your name, email, phone number or payment details. Purchases are always made on the retailer’s own website.
3. The data we handle, why, and our lawful basis
| Data | Why | Lawful basis (UK GDPR, Art. 6) | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our own visit measurement: the page, device type (mobile or desktop), referring site, utm parameters and a daily anonymous code | To know how many people visit, where they come from and which pages help | Legitimate interests (1)(f). The code is a one-way hash of your IP address and browser that changes every day; your IP address is not stored and no cookie is used | Up to 13 months |
| Clicks on “View at retailer”: that a listing was clicked, the channel and the time | To learn which deals are useful, measure results and discard bot clicks | Legitimate interests (1)(f); it does not identify you | While useful for reporting, without identification |
| Google Analytics (cookies _ga): pages visited, time on site, source, device and approximate location | Usage statistics to improve the site | Consent (1)(a): only switched on if you accept in the cookie banner | As set in Google Analytics (up to 14 months) |
| Price alerts through our Telegram bot: your chat identifier and the product | To send the alert you asked for | Performing the service you requested (1)(b) and consent (1)(a) | Until you stop (/stop) or the product is removed |
| Browser extension: the product page address (and the barcode and price shown, where the page provides them) | To return the price history and other retailers | Performing the service (1)(b) | Not linked to your browser; no browsing history kept |
| Messages you send us (email, rights requests) | To reply and meet our obligations | Legitimate interests (1)(f), legal obligation (1)(c) and legal claims | As long as needed and for the limitation period |
We don’t process special category data and we don’t make automated decisions that significantly affect you. The site is not directed at children; if you are under 18, please use it with a parent or guardian.
4. Who we share data with
- Retailers: when you click “View at retailer” you go to the retailer’s site, which has its own privacy policy and may use affiliate cookies to credit the sale. We send them nothing beyond what your browser already sends when opening the link.
- Google (Analytics): only if you accept statistics cookies. Google acts as our processor and may process data outside the UK (for example in the United States). Such transfers rely on the safeguards Google provides, such as the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
- Telegram, WhatsApp and social networks: our channels run on those platforms, which have their own policies and handle their users’ data.
- Hosting and database providers, who handle data only to provide us with the service.
- Authorities, where required by law or court order.
We don’t sell personal data.
5. Cookies
We use necessary cookies and, with your consent, statistics cookies. Details, and how to change your choice, are in the Cookie Policy.
6. Your rights
Under the UK GDPR you can ask us, at any time, for access to your data; correction of inaccurate data; erasure; restriction of processing; a portable copy; and you can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where we rely on consent you can withdraw it at any time (change your cookie preferences in the site footer).
To use your rights, write to the contact details given on the site. We reply within one month. Because most of the data we hold doesn’t identify you, we may ask for extra information to find what is yours, such as your Telegram chat identifier.
If you are not happy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
7. Security
We use technical and organisational measures to protect data against unauthorised access, loss and misuse, such as encrypted connections (HTTPS), restricted access to our systems, and handling visit data without storing your IP address. No system is immune to failure; if an incident is likely to put you at risk we will tell you and the ICO as the law requires.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The date of the latest update is at the top, and significant changes will be highlighted on the site.
